Festivities began with pre-dinner drinks in The Old School House, the original building of Oswestry School founded in 1407 and standing in the grounds of St Oswald's Parich Church. Now a restaurant, the owner, OO Sophie Dillon, was happy for everyone to come together upstairs in the building prior to the dinner. There were many familiar faces present and everyone agreed that it was the ideal place to begin the evening.
At 7.30pm the diners headed across the road to The Wynnstay Hotel where OOS President, Ian Campbell (1968-73) said grace and all settled down to some fabulous food while Schools' Director of Music, Aled Phillips, played the piano.
Following the meal former Master, Niall Lambkin (1984-2017) gave a speech to the room before the honorary auctioneer, Mr Alan Halliday-Taylor (current parent) set about the auction.
The toasts were made... 'to the Queen!'... 'to the School'... etc and the guests invited to applaud the decades who were in attendance. Last man standing was David Tomley (1942-50), the oldest OO in attendance, for whom a rousing round of applause was given.
There was some fierce bidding at times, and some bargains to be had, but in the end everything was sold - including a signed copy of Niall's speech!
Between the raffle and the auction the attendees raised a magnificent £3,180 that will be earmarked for the good of the School.
Thank you to all who attended. Your support of the Old Oswestrian Society is so very much appreciated.
