Oswestry School celebrates a memorable Founder's Day

On Saturday, 14th September 2024, Oswestry School marked its annual Founder's Day with a celebration full of tradition, reflection, and fun.

The sun shone down on the event, making it a perfect day for the many activities that brought together current students, staff, Old Oswestrians (OOs), and the wider school community.

Starting the Day: Old Oswestrian AGM and VIP Coffee

The day began in the heart of Oswestry School’s library with the Old Oswestrian AGM, where former pupils gathered to reminisce, share news, and discuss upcoming initiatives and the Society's achievements over the past year. Afterward, VIPs enjoyed coffee and informal conversations before heading to the spiritual heart of the day.

Founder's Service at St Oswald's Parish Church

Attendees made their way to the nearby St Oswald's Parish Church for the Founder's Service, a traditional highlight of the day. The congregation was treated to an inspiring address by this year's guest speaker, Mira Kovalchuk (2018-22). An Old Oswestrian herself, Mira spoke eloquently about how her time at Oswestry School had shaped her life and future ambitions. Now a student at University College London (UCL), she shared her journey from Oswestry to one of the world’s leading universities, crediting the school with giving her the confidence and support to pursue her dreams.

Activities around the School and Family Fun on the Maes-y-Llan

After the service, the Maes-y-Llan transformed into a hub of excitement and laughter for the Family Fun Day. Pupils and families enjoyed a wide range of activities, from inflatable games to a charming dog show that delighted spectators of all ages. Various stalls, run by both pupils and Friends of Oswestry School, offered everything from baked goods to crafts, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Inside the school library, an archive exhibition took visitors on a journey through Oswestry’s past, with historic photographs, memorabilia, and documents on display. Over in the school theatre, a captivating dance display showcased the talents of Oswestry pupils, and visitors were given an early glimpse of the proposed plans for the new Performing Arts Centre, generating a buzz of excitement about the school’s future.

Sporting Rivalries: Old Oswestrians vs. School Matches

Sporting tradition is a cornerstone of Founder's Day, and this year was no exception. Old Oswestrians faced off against the current pupils and staff in a series of fiercely competitive matches. In the shooting competition, the OOs displayed their steady hands and sharp aim, securing a win. The football match was a thrilling contest, with the OOs once again triumphing over the school team. The netball match, however, ended in a closely fought draw, with both sides showing incredible skill and teamwork.

Founder's Dinner: An Evening of Celebration

The day culminated with the prestigious Founder's Dinner held in the Peter Humphreys Centre (PHC). As the evening sun bathed the Refectory Terrace, guests gathered for pre-dinner drinks, setting a relaxed and celebratory tone for the night ahead. Adding to the ambiance, Old Oswestrian Libby Gliksman (2003-09) entertained guests to live music, enchanting everyone with her beautiful singing, accompanied by a talented pianist.

Inside the PHC, guests were treated to an elegant meal and a special dance performance by performing arts pupils that captivated the audience. The evening’s guest speaker, Rob McCrea (1981-84), an Old Oswestrian with an impressive career in acting, provided both entertainment and inspiration. His speech was filled with anecdotes from his time on set with famous Hollywood stars, offering a humorous and heartfelt reflection on life after Oswestry. He was accompanied by a special guest, his father Frank McCrea, a much-loved former teacher at Oswestry School from 1981 to 2002. The presence of Frank, fondly remembered by many, added a touch of nostalgia and warmth to the evening.

In addition to Frank, other notable former staff members in attendance included Dorothy Bowen, Sandy Wilson, Pat Darbyshire, and Sue Leonard, who were warmly welcomed by former pupils and colleagues. Their presence further enriched the evening’s sense of community and shared history.

An auction held during the dinner was a resounding success, raising £1,475 for school initiatives, thanks to the generosity of attendees. The evening wrapped up with many guests lingering late into the night, enjoying the company of friends old and new.

Looking Ahead: Founder's Day 2025

As the celebrations came to a close, attendees were already looking forward to next year's Founder's Day, set for Saturday, 13th September 2025. With this year's event a glowing success, there’s no doubt that the Oswestry School community will come together once again to celebrate its proud history and vibrant future.

In all, Founder's Day 2024 was a day to remember, filled with tradition, joy, and a sense of shared heritage that makes Oswestry School truly special.
